Note to a Friend (2)

Heat and humidity are good for corn
But not for people, the woman from
Illinois says. She has legions
On her payroll and battalions in her bag.
Of her blond hair and cold gaze
You don’t know what to make,
Never having visited the Midwest
And not slated to any time soon.
It is your understanding that women
From those parts more readily mate
While the island of Manhattan features
The unspeakable in full pursuit of the unavailable.
Your problem is a small one if only you would laugh.
The women you don’t want you seek to please
So they won’t kill you while you’re hurt by the rest
For spurning you. Some great classical recordings
Await if you’ll only find the time to listen.
